After the Drought, Before the Flooding

Two months into calendar autumn

I stood on south Tabor

feeling air expand and crack

my lungs just like the

skin on my knuckles.

Across Portland’s handful of east,

across the trees and the buttes

and the roads buried beneath leaves,

Wy’east loomed white.
